The weird mama

So my mum is a little strange, she's very religious and superstitious. She takes holy water from the church so she can bless things in her house, including at one point spraying it on me :S

She has very strange superstitions that I haven't heard of before, you can't take a photo with 3 people in it or else the middle person will die. We have many photos of 3 people with my mum sprinting to get into the background.

And this is sooo my mum. Don't eat lying down or else this will happen! I can't stop laughing!

Also everything causes cancer.

Anyway, I came across something new I haven't seen her do before, it creeped me out a bit.
So you see this teacup? Nice normal teacup.

But oh, there's something in there, let's take a look inside.

O_O

I was too scared to touch what was in there but from what I could see there's two dead and dried out lizards (I don't want to know if they were alive when my mum found them). There's a water divining stick, a set of emerald coloured stone earrings, a painted gold rock, a coin, one ring and a plain gravely rock.

So what is she trying to do with this teacup? Does it represent good fortune? Is she targeting someone? For good or evil?!

Let me know what you think it means, I'll ask my mum about it later. I think the fun is in figuring out what it means!

My mama's weird, I can't help but laugh ^_^

Hmm... what is her cultural background? I know that in some countries, there are particular unlucky numbers, and there are also some superstitions about photos stealing people's souls.
The lizard thing... hmmm, that is strange... perhaps she was trying to bring good fortune to someone (emerald earrings, gold stones, coins, rings?), or it is a shrine to someone? Maybe it was a lucky lizard (or perhaps not so lucky?)

I'm interested to see what the reason was!

She's Filipino. She has sooo many more weird superstitions, this is just the tip of the iceberg. But this is the first time I've seen a weird shrine like this!

hmm, my supervisor told me about the Burmese government (I think) moving their capital because it had lucky coordinates, and people believing in lucky rocks infused with the spirit of ancestors (animist sort of beliefs), maybe it was something like that? lizard spirits?

Ahhh I asked my mum about her little shrine and it's basically just a miscellaneous pot of good fortune stuff. The lizards mean that you'll always have money and won't lose any, then the jewelry is goodluck (she said the earrings were Jade). She kept the stick cos it was in a U-shape like a magnet, I suppose to draw in the monies. She didn't really have a reason why she stored jewelry with the lizards, I think it was something like they would absorb the luck of the jewelry. She usually does stuff like this, with no logical explanations but it makes sense in her head :) She was laughing when I showed her the teacup, she probably hoped it'd be her little secret! Then she tried to give me one of the rings and I said I didn't wanna wear a ring that's been sitting around with dead lizards!
